| Vampires Subdue Derby, 4-2 | The Santa Clara Vampires beat the Derby Panthers, 4-2, at River Otters Ballpark. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Jamie Vlasis, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Jared Quintela got credit for the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 6 innings. The save went to Mike Holmes, his 7th this season.
Vlasis contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Santa Clara in the bottom of the first. With his team trailing 1-0, Vlasis took a curveball from Brad Fisher and stroked the home run to left-center. His 8th home run of the season allowed the Vampires to leap in front, 2-1.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Vlasis told a Santa Clara Daily reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
At 15-21, Santa Clara is in 5th place in the Pete Rose League Alex Rodriguez Division.
