| Smith Excels, But Dragons Win | Yomiuri left fielder Tyler Smith had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Smith went 4-5 with a home run and 2 doubles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 6, even as Chunichi beat the Giants, 16-8. Smith was named the player of the game despite the loss. Hirokazu Matsumoto was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 1 of 2 save opportunities. The Dragons improved to 29-31.
Had Bill Jacobs not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Jacobs hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 11-8, in favor of the Dragons.
"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Chunichi skipper Nick Murphy.
