| Chunichi Wins 8-5 to Continue Red Hot Start | The Hiroshima Toyo Carp got a superb performance from catcher Jim Sumner, but the Chunichi Dragons still won the game, 8-5. Sumner was named the player of the game despite the loss. He was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Corey Carr sewed up the save, his 5th. Chunichi, at 9-3, has sizzled in the early going.
In the bottom of the 6th, second baseman Shimei Iijima gave Chunichi the lead when he hit a grand slam home run. The Dragons had been trailing 4-3, but the two-out home run off Hiroshima Toyo pitcher Shoji Omori changed that -- and Chunichi went on to win.
"We'll enjoy this win for now, but it's just one," Iijima told local reporters. "We've got to keep it going."
