Golden Eagles Raise Rally Flag, Beat Rice, 4-1

The South Mississippi Golden Eagles took Rice pitcher Jamie Burnett's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Toughkenamon College Fields. The final score had South Mississippi getting past the Owls, 4-1. Burnett went 5.1 innings and allowed no earned runs, striking out 7. South Mississippi reliever Jaime Bickers was the winner. His record is now 1-2. The losing pitcher was Mike McGee. The 9th-place Golden Eagles now have a 4-game winning streak.

Had Manuel Gonzalez not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Gonzalez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Golden Eagles.

"As well as we've been playing, I think we can play even better," said South Mississippi manager Jason Raymond.
