de la Torre Batters Stanford for 5 Hits

A jubilant Luis de la Torre joined the postgame press conference at Ballpark of Shiprock College today to offer some unusual words of encouragement -- for the Stanford Cardinals pitching staff he had just vanquished.

"It may not have looked like it," said the UCLA Bruins catcher, "but I saw some awful good pitches today. If luck hadn't been on my side it might have turned out a lot different."

That would not have been the conclusion of anyone who saw his dominant 5-for-6 hitting performance, which led the Bruins to a 12-5 win.

"He made it look easy," said Rémy Coutant, manager of the Cardinals. "We never figured out what to do with him. Obviously."

Luis de la Torre singled in the 1st, grounded out in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off Will Doutt in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This season de la Torre is batting .286 with 2 home runs. He has scored 9 runs and driven in 9.
