Long Beach State starter Jim Shaffner had a strong outing against the Arizona Wildcats at Red Wings Ballpark. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 4-3 win. Long Beach State reliever Alan Paradiso picked up the win to move to 1-0. Kevin Fineran suffered the loss.
The 49'ers got a big at-bat from catcher Brock Carnes. For the game, Carnes went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and a walk. He drove in 2 runs. In the top of the eighth, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 3rd double of the season gave Long Beach State a 4-3 lead.
