Ducks Need Extras to Top Golden Eagles

Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at Ballpark of Storm Lake College.

The South Mississippi Golden Eagles got a sterling performance from shortstop William DeMatteo, but the Ducks still prevailed, 9-8. DeMatteo was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He went 3-3 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. The win was Rich Strausbaugh's in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Brett Lucido took the loss for South Mississippi.

Late-game drama came in the top of the ninth inning. With no one out and the bases empty, the batter, Stephon Cadle, hit a single. It helped Oregon seize the win.

"If we keep winning the close games," Cadle said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."

Oregon now has a 3-game win streak.
