Owls Stymie Oregon State, Take 4-1 Win

The Rice Owls took Oregon State pitcher Miguel Covarrubias's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Toughkenamon College Fields. The final score had Rice getting past the Beavers, 4-1. Covarrubias went 5 innings and allowed no earned runs, striking out 8. The winner was Dustin Mongillo in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Ben Ruff took the loss. The win moves Rice to a record of 3-3.

Bobby Chancellor, who is the 2nd-best prospect in the Owls organization, chipped in for Rice with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.

In comments to the Rice Observer, Chancellor admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
