Zabel Slugs Republic to 5-1 Win

The So Cal Republic knocked off the Portland Beavers, 5-1, at Waterfront Park. Gerd Zabel, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason So Cal won. The right fielder hit 3 home runs. The Republic own a robust 43-24 mark.

So Cal grabbed the momentum in the top of the fifth, when Zabel, who is a two-time All-Star, hit a solo home run. His 11th home run of the season put the Republic out in front, 1-0.

"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Zabel told reporters after the game.
