| Salukis Turn Back Wake Forest, 5-3 | The Wake Forest Demon Deacans inaugurated the 2038 campaign with a disappointing 5-3 loss to the South Illinois Salukis at Cypress Quarters College Grounds. South Illinois center fielder Elijah Samuels had a big impact on the outcome. He was 2 for 5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Max Marinelli got the win, improving to 1-0. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 0.
Early in the game, Samuels had a 3-run home run for South Illinois. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Salukis on top, 3-0.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said South Illinois manager Justin Page. "It's usually not just one thing."
