Vikings Can't Finish, Lose 5-3

Victoria got a terrific performance from pitcher Bill Kunkel, but it wasn't enough to beat the Eugene Emeralds. Eugene won the The drakkar contest, 5-3. Kunkel was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. The Emeralds now have a record of 21-27 with the win over Victoria.

Had Hugo Mendoza not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mendoza hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 5-3, in favor of the Emeralds.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Mendoza told a Eugene Citizen reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
