River Chiefs Clip Panthers in Tight Contest

The Charleston Panthers got a sterling performance from first baseman Omar Veliz, but the River Chiefs still prevailed, 5-4. Veliz was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He went 2 for 5 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The winner was Eric O'Sullivan in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Stephen Lau took the loss. Paul Childers got the save, the 6th for him this season.

Had Andres Talavera not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Talavera hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the River Chiefs.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Talavera.

The River Chiefs improve their record to 18-16 with the win over Charleston.
