The Cape Verde Vesuvius faced a tough opponent in Jacksonville pitcher Juan Ortiz, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Hellcats Park by a final score of 7-4. Ortiz went 6.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. The Hellcats fall to 6-11 and continue their uninspiring start to the 2038 season.
Had Dusty Evans not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Evans hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-4, in favor of the Vesuvius.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Evans. "And not try to do too much."
