| Bears Come Up Short at Albuquerque | Albuquerque pitcher Ken Stein did his part in helping his team beat the Birmingham Bears, 3-2. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Albuquerque reliever Izumo Ikarashi picked up the win, bumping his record to 6-1. Nobuhiko Newton was collared with the loss. The Cacti bumped their record to 74-63 with this latest triumph.
Had Craig Whetzel not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Whetzel hit a bases-clearing double. That made the score 3-1, in favor of the Cacti.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Birmingham manager António Álvarez. "The effort was great."
