| Bears Solve Fireballs, 4-2 | Bill Hopgood had a good game, but he could not keep the Joplin Fireballs from falling, 4-2, to the Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston. The Joplin left fielder went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk in the loss. Birmingham reliever Nobuhiko Newton picked up the win, upping his record to 5-2. David Myers was saddled with the loss. Jim Clemons locked down his 2nd save.
In the bottom of the 6th, right fielder Joel Moroney gave Birmingham the lead when he hit a 3-run home run. The Bears had been trailing 2-0, but the two-out home run off Joplin pitcher David Myers changed that -- and Birmingham went on to win.
"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said Birmingham skipper António Álvarez. "I can't complain."
The Bears bumped their record to 25-25 with this latest triumph.
