Takahashi Big Deal in Hiroshima Toyo: Hits for Cycle
Saturday, June 17th, 2034
Seiju Takahashi did everything he could for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp today -- literally.
The 21-year-old second baseman hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Carp, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Yomiuri Giants, 9-0, at Ballpark of Yamagata College.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Takahashi reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Takahashi banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 4 runs batted in and 3 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Seiju Takahashi singled in the 1st, hit a three-run triple in the 2nd, flied out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Shang-de Hsueh in the 5th and doubled in the 8th.
For the season, Takahashi is hitting at a .315 clip with 3 home runs, 16 RBIs and has scored 18 runs. He has 29 hits, 15 walks and a .438 on-base percentage.
