Royales Hope Opening Day Win Bodes Well for Season
|
Fans of the Montreal Royales who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Montreal win over the visiting Calgary Outlaws, 7-5. Jim Spracklin started for the home team against Davy Holland. Keith Harkness earned the coveted player of the game honors. The winner was Montreal reliever Earl Duval, now 1-0. The loser was Hugh Umlah.
In the bottom of the 6th, left fielder Terry Merritt gave Montreal the lead when he hit a 2-run single. The Royales had been trailing 5-4, but the two-out single off Calgary pitcher Hugh Umlah changed that -- and Montreal went on to win.
"I like our moxie," said Royales manager Kevin Haynes.
