Veliz Hits 2 home runs in Tar Heels Win
|
The North Carolina Tar Heels topped the Michigan Wolverines, 7-3, with youngster Omar Veliz playing a key role. Veliz went 4-4 with 2 home runs, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Tar Heels in the win. Reliever Mike Vairo picked up the win. His record improves to 2-0. David Simmons took the loss. The Wolverines, now 17-23, have lost 4 in a row.
North Carolina used the bat of J.D. Bruce to get the win. The pinch hitter hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to put the Tar Heels ahead, 6-3. It was his lone hit in 2 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"Enjoyed this one," Bruce told the North Carolina News. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
