Fresno State center fielder Tyler Thompson had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Thompson was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, even as Mississippi State beat the Bulldogs, 5-4. Thompson was named the player of the game despite the loss. Mississippi State starter Jake Bourke was credited with the win after throwing 84 pitches over 6 innings. His record now stands at 2-0. Devonte Lebeaux got credit for the save for Mississippi State. It was his 5th of the year.
Wayne Firestone aided the Mississippi State cause with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second. For the game, the third baseman went 1 for 3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Firestone. "And not try to do too much."
The Bulldogs, at 10-10, have lost 4 in a row.
