Cross has 3 hit day as Demon Deacans Squeeze Past Kansas
|
Though the conditions were not ideal, the Wake Forest Demon Deacans and Kansas Jayhawks came back from a rain delay to finish their game.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacans defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 9-8, at Cypress Quarters College Grounds today. Leading the charge for Wake Forest was center fielder Jeff Cross. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. The win was credited to David Shaffer in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Dennis Chambley took the loss. Vic Horn finished the game for Wake Forest and earned his 5th save.
Cross had a game-changing single in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-0 fastball from Dennis Chambley, he banged a run-scoring single to left, giving the Demon Deacans a 9-8 lead. It was the 11th hit of the year for Cross.
"I felt good up there," said Cross. "I saw the ball well."
Wake Forest occupies 20th place in the Ron Fraser Division at 8-12.
