The USC Trojans overcame a good performance by California left fielder John Sullivan to knock off California, 4-3, at Prisoners Ballpark. Sullivan went 2 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. USC reliever Brandon Jones got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Ernie Spencer was tagged with the loss. Earning his 5th save for USC was Chris Moran.

The result might have been different for USC, had it not been for Chris Whatley. The designated hitter produced a 2-run single in the top of the second inning to put the Trojans ahead, 2-0. For the game, Whatley had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

In comments to the USC Observer, Whatley admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
