Whatley goes 3-for-5 as Trojans Squeeze Past Houston
USC designated hitter Chris Whatley picked up 4 ribbies while helping his team beat back the Houston Cougars, 9-8. USC reliever Dave Tressler picked up the win to move to 2-0. Jesus Martinez suffered the loss. The Trojans bumped their record to 5-5 with this latest triumph.

Whatley had a game-changing single in the top of the eighth. On a full count cutter from Jesus Martinez, he banged a 2-run single to right-center, giving the Trojans a 9-8 lead. It was the 20th hit of the year for Whatley.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Whatley said.
