Tar Heels Clip Salukis in Tight Contest
The South Illinois Salukis got a sterling performance from designated hitter Chris Maynard, but the Tar Heels still prevailed, 9-6. Maynard was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He went 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. North Carolina reliever Billy Still picked up the win to move to 1-1. Cory Dorsey suffered the loss. The Tar Heels raised their record to 6-3.

Had Ben Bennet not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Bennet hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 7-6, in favor of the Tar Heels.

"I felt good up there," said Bennet. "I saw the ball well."
