The Commodores had to overcome a good performance from North Carolina pitcher Mike Winter to claim a 3-2 win at Ballpark of Barrow College. Winter went 5.1 innings and allowed 1 earned run. Vanderbilt reliever Steve Higgins was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Billy Still. Picking up the save was Jimmy Gregus, his 4th.
Had Tom Harvey not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Harvey hit a 2-run double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Commodores.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Harvey said.
The Commodores raised their record to 4-3.
