The South Mississippi Golden Eagles got a stellar performance from pitcher Mike Hughes, who handcuffed the Rice offense en route to a 4-1 win at Toughkenamon College Fields. Hughes, now 1-0, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 1 hit, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing no earned runs. South Mississippi goes to 5-1 with the win.

The Golden Eagles got a big at-bat from shortstop Nick Ashburn. For the game, Ashburn was 1 for 4 with a home run. In the top of the third, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 3rd home run of the season gave South Mississippi a 1-0 lead.
