The Owls had to overcome a fine performance from UCLA pitcher Paul Poorman to grab a 5-3 win at Ballpark of Shiprock College. Poorman allowed 3 earned runs over 5.2 innings. Jimmy Pennington, credited with the win, is now 3-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. Bob Downard nailed down his 2nd save.

The Owls got a big at-bat from left fielder Jesse Seal. For the game, Seal went 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the first, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Rice a 2-0 lead.

"I still think this team has room for improvement," Seal told the Rice Daily.

The Owls raised their record to 4-1.
