George Nash had a good game, but he could not keep the Rice Owls from falling, 5-4, to the Oregon State Beavers at Toughkenamon College Fields. The Rice designated hitter was 2-3 with a double and 2 walks in the loss. Oregon State reliever Jay Reiling was credited with the win, to go to 1-0. John Newmaster took the loss for Rice. Losses have been few and far between for the Owls, who are now 3-1.
The Beavers got a big at-bat from right fielder Hugh Zeigler. For the game, Zeigler went 1-3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the second, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Oregon State a 2-0 lead.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Oregon State manager Mike Cole.
