Johnston hits 2 home runs, Owls Move to 1-0
|
The Rice Owls satisfied the home crowd at Toughkenamon College Fields, treating them to a season-opening win, 8-5, over the Washington State Cougars. Third Baseman Dan Johnston was named player of the game for Rice. Jimmy Pennington, credited with the win, is now 1-0. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in 1.2 innings.
Johnston contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for Rice in the bottom of the third. With his team trailing 2-1, Johnston took a fastball from Dan Kircher and stroked the home run to left. His 2nd home run of the season allowed the Owls to leap in front, 4-2.
In comments to the Rice Daily, Johnston admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
