Black Squirrels Solve Cyclones, 5-3
|
The Tree City Black Squirrels defeated the Coney Island Cyclones, 5-3, in Donnie Moore League action at The Nut House, with Tree City pitcher Sixto Árias named player of the game. The winning pitcher was Árias, now 7-6. He tossed 6 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 6. Sherwin Aberin got the save, his 5th in 6 chances.
The Black Squirrels got a big at-bat from shortstop José Martínez. For the game, Martínez went 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Tree City a 5-3 lead.
"You can't take yourself too seriously," Martínez told the Tree City Herald. "But at the end of the day, we do play to win ballgames."
The Black Squirrels bumped their record to 51-50 with this latest triumph.
