St. Petersburg rode a good effort from starter Brad Leys to beat the Boise Bloodhounds at Grand Canyon Valley Park. The final score was 5-1. In 5.1 innings, Leys surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 2. He allowed no runs. Kelly Livingston notched his 9th save in 16 chances.
The Pelicans got a big at-bat from third baseman Jerry Mays. For the game, Mays went 1 for 4. In the top of the fourth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 39th hit of the season gave St. Petersburg a 1-0 lead.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Boise manager Todd Barrett. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
Even with the win, the Pelicans have a dismal 35-65 record.
