An-yi Bian did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the San Diego Hops from losing, 9-8, to the Portland Beavers at Waterfront Park. Bian went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. The winner was Portland reliever Rolf Pals, now 2-5. The loser was Francisco Zúñiga. Portland has now won 3 straight, while the Hops have lost 3 in a row.

The Beavers got a big at-bat from left fielder Robert Mentzer. For the game, Mentzer went 1-4 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 8th home run of the season gave Portland a 9-6 lead.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Mentzer said.
