Flash Sneak Past Phantoms, 9-8
|
The skies opened up and the rain fell at Phantoms Field.
In a high-scoring game between Fairfield and Coronado, left fielder Daniel Cruz was a difference-maker. The 22-year-old earned player of the game honors in the 9-8 Fairfield win. He was 4-5 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Fairfield reliever Alex Gutierrez picked up the win, upping his record to 6-8. Jamie Morgan took the loss.
Had Dan Thibodeau not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Thibodeau hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Flash.
"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Cruz.
Fairfield goes to 52-54, Coronado to 55-52.
