The Cacti faced a stiff challenge from Joplin pitcher Pat Kirk, but persevered to claim a win at The Firepit. The final score was 2-1. Kirk went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Albuquerque reliever T.J. Sparks was the winner. His record is now 2-2. Pat Kirk took the loss. Willie Fierro notched his 38th save in 47 chances.
Chris Hillier drew 1 walk in 3 plate appearances for Albuquerque. The 22-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the top of the seventh. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off José Santos. It was his 29th RBI of the season.
"We squandered some opportunities," said Joplin manager Chance Jackson.
The third-place Cacti improved to 54-47.
