The Peoria Caterpillars topped the Joplin Fireballs by the score of 5-1, with the largest share of the credit going to shortstop Mike Burge. Burge belted 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the Caterpillars. Steve Gould, the winner, improved to 3-4. He held the Fireballs to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 6 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The Caterpillars improved to 30-41.
Peoria first baseman Thomas Hughes contributed to the cause with a double in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, Hughes was 1 for 1 with a double.
In comments to the Peoria Citizen, Hughes admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
