Al Bates never let Omaha get something going. The Joplin right-hander commanded his change up in pitching the Fireballs to a 5-1 win. The winning pitcher was Bates, now 1-0. He tossed 6 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 4 and fanning 4. Joplin is off to a hot start at 2-1.
Josh Kamm aided the Joplin cause with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder was 1 for 3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
"I thought we played a nice game," Bates told the Joplin Bulletin. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
