The Havana Stogies got a good effort from starter Joe Hardy in defeating the Portland Beavers at Waterfront Park. The final score was 3-2. Hardy, now 15-0, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 8, walking 2, and allowing 2 earned runs. Felipe Arreola got the save, his 25th in 28 chances.

In the top of the 6th, catcher Arturo Velásquez gave Havana the lead when he hit a 2-run double. The Stogies had been trailing 2-1, but the two-out double off Portland pitcher Félix Reina changed that -- and Havana went on to win.

"It was a solid team effort," said Velásquez after the game.

Havana goes to 73-34. The win puts them 7½ games up in their division.
