Almost There: So Cal On Cusp of R2 Triumph After 5-1 Win
|
The So Cal Republic moved to within one game of the League Pennant today, downing the Rubber City Rhinos on the road at The Rubber Grounds by a score of 5-1. Republic right-hander Phoenix Smith was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he threw 6 innings allowing 1 run. The win gives the Republic a 3-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Championship.
Gerd Zabel, who is rated as the 7th best prospect by BNN, chipped in for So Cal with a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth. For the game, the center fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.
"We've got a great group of guys," Zabel said, "and we're having fun right now."
Game 5 is scheduled for tomorrow at The Rubber Grounds. Slated to start are Tanner Johnson for So Cal and James Thompson for Rubber City.
