Varmits Score Late to Upend Nutcrackers, 4-3
|
The Yuma Varmits defeated the Normal Nutcrackers, 4-3, in Cecil Fielder League action at The Range, with Yuma pitcher Ferdinand Bevan named player of the game. The win was credited to Ruben Noyola in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Jin-yu Kim took the loss. Brian Claphan earned the save, his 5th, for the Varmits.
Had Willie Curry not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Curry hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Varmits.
"I still think this team has room for improvement," Curry told the Yuma Herald.
The Varmits bumped their record to 21-16 with this latest triumph.
