Hanshin Breaks Through for First Win in Japan Series Championship; Now Trails 3-1
|
Already down in the Japan Series Championship, the Hanshin Tigers put on their best show, beating the ORIX Buffaloes by a final score of 4-2 today. Yoshito Maekawa earned player of the game honors, as he threw 5 innings of 3-hit ball. Hanshin now trails ORIX 3-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Steve Durrett came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing ORIX pitcher Mike Blythe, he hit a first pitch cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Hanshin on top, 3-2.
"They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Durrett said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do."
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Ballpark of Otofuke College. Slated to start are Shuichiro Otsuka for the ORIX Buffaloes and Santos Restrepo for the the Hanshin Tigers.
