Panthers Need Extras to Top Vampires
The Derby Panthers beat the Santa Clara Vampires, 9-8 at Managua HS Grounds, in part due to first baseman Joe Haggerty, who nabbed player of the game honors. He was 2-3 with 2 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Derby reliever Jack Warren was credited with the win, to go to 1-0. Matt Reger took the loss for Santa Clara. Derby is now 19-28.

The Panthers got a big at-bat from shortstop Buddy Hulscher. For the game, Hulscher was 1-2. In the bottom of the tenth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 2nd hit of the season gave Derby a 9-8 lead.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Haggerty said after the game.
