Fans of the Derby Panthers who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Derby win over the visiting Canby Lancers, 8-5. Larry Sceviour started for the home team against Jim Casey. Bobby Croy earned the coveted player of the game honors.

Tom Vallis aided the Derby cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the left fielder was 1 for 4.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Vallis said after the game.
