Makeever Goes Wild, But Monarchs Win
|
The London Monarchs overcame a good performance by Niagara center fielder John Makeever to knock off Niagara, 6-5, at Hatchets Ballpark. Makeever was 3-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Ray Batstone, credited with the win, is now 1-1. He allowed no runs on no hits in 0.2 innings. Harry Ayotte finished the game for London and earned his 8th save.
Had Kirk Valcourt not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Valcourt hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Monarchs.
Valcourt told a London Gazette reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.
The Monarchs bumped their record to 25-19 with this latest triumph.
