Stanford got a terrific game from designated hitter Bill Hopgood. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Arizona State, 5-4. Hopgood was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 4 for 4 with 4 singles. He drove in 2 runs. Bob Clayton earned the save for Arizona State, his 4th. Arizona State, at 20-22, occupies 16th place in the Cliff Gustafson.

The Sun Devils got a big at-bat from first baseman Tomas Robles. For the game, Robles went 1-3 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the third, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 12th home run of the season gave Arizona State a 3-2 lead.
