Salukis Score Late to Upend Seminoles, 7-5
|
The South Illinois Salukis beat the Florida State Seminoles, 7-5, at Field of the Shield. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Salvatore Marroquin, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. South Illinois reliever Jim Noble picked up the win to move to 1-2. Rob Ray suffered the loss. South Illinois, at 15-20, sits in 19th place in the Ron Fraser Division.
Chris Maynard, who is tied for 7th in the SBL with a .702 slugging percentage, aided the South Illinois cause with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. For the game, the designated hitter went 1-3 with a home run and a walk.
Marroquin told the South Illinois Daily News: "I was born for the big stage."
