Pitcher Jamal Gainey was sensational for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in his team's 9-0 triumph over the Rice Owls. Gainey received player of the game honors, while picking up the win. Gainey, now 2-3, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 1 hit, while striking out 4, walking 3, and allowing no earned runs.

Matt Steiner chipped in for Mississippi State with a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth. For the game, the catcher had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.
