Tigers Nip Demon Deacans, 5-4
|
Fans at Zodiac Ballpark were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Auburn Tigers take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacans.
Auburn beat Wake Forest at Zodiac Ballpark, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher John Palermo, who earned player of the game honors. Palermo got the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed 3 hits and walked 3 over 5.1 innings. Palermo allowed 1 earned run. Earning his 2nd save for Auburn was Allen Westmoreland.
Had Chad Metivier not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Metivier hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Tigers.
"It was sure nice to get the win but there's a lot of baseball left," Metivier after the game.
Even with the win, the Tigers have a dismal 9-18 record.
