Clemson beat Virginia in a rain-soaked ballgame.
Joe Bates was instrumental in his team's 7-6 triumph over the Virginia Cavaliers. The right fielder was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Clemson Tigers. Clemson reliever Ben Matthews picked up the win to move to 1-0. Jon Moore suffered the loss.
The Tigers got a big at-bat from second baseman Matt Gammon. For the game, Gammon went 1-2. In the top of the ninth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 9th hit of the season gave Clemson a 7-6 lead.
"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Bates told the Clemson Times.
Even with the win, the Tigers have a dismal 7-19 record.
