The Houston Cougars got a sterling performance from pitcher Adam Burke, but the Owls still prevailed, 5-4. Burke was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He threw 5 innings of 3-hit ball. Rice reliever B.J. Kelly picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Jesus Martinez absorbed the loss. The Owls, now at 6-10, know that wins in April count the same as wins in September.
The Owls got a big at-bat from catcher Randy Stem. For the game, Stem was 2 for 5 with 2 singles. In the top of the tenth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 10th hit of the season gave Rice a 5-4 lead.
"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Stem.
