Gamecocks Win, Hope to Turn Around Slow Start
|
The Miami Hurricanes and South Carolina Gamecocks brought some excitement to Gremlins Ballpark.
The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Miami Hurricanes, 12-5, at Gremlins Ballpark. The win was largely due to the efforts of second baseman Scott Herrin, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4-5 with a double, 3 singles, and was hit by a pitch, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. South Carolina starter Marty Woodruff was credited with the win after throwing 82 pitches over 5.2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0.
The Gamecocks got a big at-bat from first baseman Corey Blades. For the game, Blades went 1 for 4 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. In the top of the fourth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave South Carolina a 5-2 lead.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Gamecocks manager Orlando Torres. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
South Carolina, now 1-2, is off to a slow start.
