Tar Heels Win, Hope to Turn Around Slow Start
|
The North Carolina Tar Heels beat the Florida State Seminoles, 6-4, at Ballpark of Riverdale College. The Tar Heels got a fine performance from right fielder Omar Veliz, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2-3 with 2 home runs, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. North Carolina reliever Kurt Wymer picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Nate Stevenson absorbed the loss. Josh Huntsman earned the save, his 1st, for the Tar Heels.
Jason Leadbeater chipped in for North Carolina with a solo home run in the top of the eighth. For the game, the third baseman had 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 1 run batted in.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Tar Heels manager William Wilson. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
North Carolina, now 1-2, is off to a slow start.
